Data and Statistics: Datastream

What is Datastream and how do I use it?

Please note: due to restrictions related to Covid-19, the Datastream database is not accessible on terminals in the Financial Resources Suite until further notice. Traditional access is not available while the Library is closed due to the coronavirus situation, but it can be accessed via the Eikon Excel Add-in.  There are instructions on accessing Eikon on the Databases A-Z. Please email your subject Academic Liaison Librarian for information on installing the Eikon desktop application to access the Datastream Excel Add-in, and for support with accessing other data online. [Instructions on access are being developed for this guide, and will be uploaded as soon as possible].

The previous version of Datastream available on two bookable PCs in the Financial Resources Suite on the first floor of the Library has been been phased out. Please go online to Eikon & Datastream for Office instead and enter a username and password from our secure password protected resources web page. Use the "Help" facility to find out how to search for items like Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) deals or tearsheets. You may sign up to view training videos, etc, using your Brunel email address.

Datastream is a complex database and all users will require an introductory training session before using it. If you require access to this database and training has not been arranged through your school, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.

We have upgraded the number of full licences to Datastream to allow a whole class to access it concurrently to provide you with flexible access to the data without your having to be on campus during this indefinite period of social distancing. We have also added five concurrent licences to Eikon with Datastream for Office for use on campus when we re-open. Please remember to sign out after your session using the button top left! N.B. Eikon has an app to keep track of the key market moving headlines as well as the charts, data and market impact analysis, sectors and commodities asset classes. You may also access an RSS feed of the market information relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Datastream is a comprehensive database of company, financial and economic data from around the world. It contains worldwide equity coverage direct from the stock markets, comprehensive market indices, economics data direct from national government sources as well as the OECD and IMF, fixed income securities and associated indices, commodities, and derivatives data. Information from Datastream is used widely by the international commercial sector.
